Heui System Operation with and without the IFS Filter System

The engine oil pump delivers low pressure oil through the engine oil filter you normally change. The filtered low pressure engine oil is also delivered to the HEUI reservoir. The HEUI then pumps high pressure oil (800-4,200 psi) to the engine head. Once in the head the oil is directed to each injector through the heads common oil rail passage. The high pressure oil is delivered to the top of the injector. When the injector is energized, the high pressure oil forces a piston forward that in turn applies force to a smaller piston on the fuel side of the injector. The injector acts as a intensifier producing near 32,000 psi on the fuel side to create atomization of the fuel. Once the electrical single drops, the injector retracts for the next cycle.

The HEUI pump is a fixed displacement axial piston pump that has many tight tolerance parts along with springs and a main shaft bearing. Any and all of the components are subject to fail as most of us may have experienced. When a HEUI begins to fail due to internal component damage, the metal debris is send to the head under high pressure and directly to the injectors. The metal fragments can then begin to "stick" the injector piston. This may cause complete stiction of the injector or intermittent operation. Regardless, the damage and reality is you will soon be experiencing engine performance issues along with a hefty bill for a tow and then possibly up to a $9,000.00 bill from a repair center. Those that can replace the injectors and the HEUI pump are still north of $5,000.00 for the parts alone.

The IFS filter is installed between the HEUI pump and the head and continuously filters the high pressure oil coming out of the HEUI to the head/injectors. With IFS installed, head and injector potential damage is drastically reduced to near zero. If a customer experiences a HEUI failure with IFS installed the IFS captures the contaminants before entering the head and causing damage to the injectors. After five years with IFS filters across the globe we have NOT had any reports of injector failures due to the IFS not protecting the injectors on a HEUI failure.
